Most people are completely ignorant, as I was, about the back ends of websites. How are pages generated? How do browsers understand and render them? How do developers build them? These aren’t common questions, especially in the era of GUI (Graphical User Interface), which basically means making everything pretty and simple for “normal” users. As a result, the hard work and entire culture behind the creation of the web goes largely unnoticed.

There are, however, entire communities devoted to building websites. Of these, one of the largest and most vibrant is dedicated to ASP.net. Now, there’s a site filled with all the latest ASP.net news from the biggest websites. It’s called Alligator Tags.

What are alligator tags? They look like this: <% and they’re used in coding the back ends of sites. It’s a somewhat esoteric piece of jargon in the geek world, but that’s exactly the demographic the site aims to please. It’s sort of a popurls for ASP.net, the universe of which has to do with C#, AJAX, 2.0 Framework, SQL, SQLite, etc. Anyway, it’s got a jaunty alligator mascot and is worth a daily visit for anyone involved in creating websites. Check it!
