I have had a taste of life at sea. It is by turns stimulating and boring, action-packed and completely empty. No wonder then, that sea shanties have been sung by mariners throughout the ages. They describe the moments of intense emotion and majestic sights, while filling the idle hours above and below decks.
You might say I find the form and content of shanties enchanting. For my own project, I hope to collaborate with friends to write, perform and record a collection of shanties that tell the story of an ill-fated whaling ship out of New Bedford, MA. Full of highs and lows, the subjects of these songs will pine for loved ones back on shore and experience the delights of the South Pacific islands.
